Handel had arranged two series of concerts in Dublin in the winter of 1741–2, at the invitation of the Duke of Devonshire, who was Lord Lieutenant of Ireland. These concerts had proved hugely popular. The Messiah premiere was not part of these series, but took place at the same venue – the Great Music Hall in Fishamble Street.
